Our Story
I'm Julee Brown, and I run Indigo Farms Seafood. The business is named after a beloved Dalmatian, Indigo Iris, and was started in 1993 by my aunts Susan Handy and Teresa Nester — the original "Fish Ladies." What began as a family tradition of bringing fresh seafood back to Floyd County from the North Carolina coast became a New River Valley institution.
I was three years old when they started. I grew up around the ocean in Atlantic Beach, N.C. and was selling seafood by the sixth grade. When my aunts decided to retire, they wanted to keep the business in the family with somebody who had a strong work ethic. I was the natural fit.
Every Wednesday morning I make the drive to the North Carolina coast, hand-pick the freshest catch available, and bring it straight back to the valley. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays I'm on the road with my white reefer truck, serving Blacksburg, Floyd, Radford, and Riner.
